History of South African clubs vs Nigerian clubs in Caf competitions

 

Ahead of Sundowns Caf Champions League clash against Enyimba, Goal takes a look at previous club meetings between Nigerian and South African teams in Caf competitions

South Africa and Nigeria have established a fierce rivalry in football over the past three decades, stemming back to the 4-0 defeat Bafana Bafana suffered at the hands of the Super Eagles in Lagos 24 years ago.

While there have been several memorable clashes between two the national side’s, there have also been some titanic matches at club level.

Goal takes a look at some of the previous club encounters between South African and Nigerian teams in the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederations Cup:

BCC Lions vs Orlando Pirates – 1995  Caf Champions League second round 

The Buccaneers won 2-1 on aggregate over two-legs to book their place in the quarterfinals. The South African’s would go on to win the competition for what is until this day, the country’s only triumph in Africa’s premier cup competition.

Orlando Pirates vs Shooting Stars – 1996 Caf Champions League quarterfinal

Deadlocked at 1-1 after two-legs, Stars came up trumps 4-3 after a penalty shootout to eliminate the defending champions from the competition. The Nigerian side would go on to lose in the final – on penalties – to Zamalek.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Julius Berger – 2001 Caf Champions League group stages 

The two side’s locked horns home and away in the 2001 Caf Champions League group stages. Following a 2-0 defeat in Nigeria, Sundowns won 1-0 on home soil to finish above Julius Berger in Group A and subsequently book their place in the semifinals. Following a penalty shoot-out win over Petro Atlético, the Brazilians suffered a 4-1 loss to Al Ahly in the final.

Ajax Cape Town vs Enyimba – 2005 Caf Champions League group stages

The Urban Warriors and Enyimba crossed swords in two group games in the 2005 Caf Champions League – this was the Nigerian clubs first meeting against a South African side in the competition. The first meeting ended in a 1-1 draw with the People’s Elephant claiming a 2-0 win in the revers fixture. Both teams, though, bowed out of the competition at the group stage with  Al Ahly and Raja Casablanca occupying the top two spots in the group.

Enyimba vs Orlando Pirates – 2006 Caf Champions League group stages 

Enyimba came up against South African opposition for the second year in a row; going head-to-head with Orlando Pirates in the group stages in the 2006 edition. The Buccaneers held the Aba giants to a 1-1 draw in the first fixture before claiming a valuable 1-0 win in Soweto. Former Enyimba player Onyekachi Okonkwo scored the decisive goal of the game.

Pirates subsequently advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual runners-up CS Sfaxien.

Black Leopards vs Warri Wolves – 2012 Caf Confederations Cup second round

The most recent meeting between clubs from the two respective countries in Caf competitions was four years ago with National First Division side Black Leopards claiming a memorable win over Warri Wolves.

Following wins over Motor Action and Saint Eloi Lupopo, the Limpopo side came up against the Wolves. Following a 3-1 defeat in Warri, Kingston Nkhatha bagged a brace in Polokwane to lead the club to a 3-3 aggregate win and into the playoff round. Despite a valiant showing in Sudan – losing 3-2 to Al-Merreikh in the first-leg – the South African’s were unable to score on home soil – just missing out on the group stages.
